Curriculum at Ruislip Gardens Primary School
Curriculum Rationale
At Ruislip Gardens Primary School, our curriculum rationale is designed to provide a coherent, ambitious, and inclusive education that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum while being fully responsive to the unique needs of our pupil population. Our curriculum is rooted in a strong foundation of literacy and numeracy, recognising that these are essential gateways to learning across all subjects.
We have chosen Grammarsaurus as the core resource for writing across all subjects. Writing is our anchor for curriculum mapping as it enables pupils to engage deeply with subject content through language. By linking other subjects—such as history, geography, art, design and technology—to the writing strand from Grammarsaurus, pupils are immersed in rich, subject-specific vocabulary and concepts. This approach supports pupils, especially those with English as an Additional Language (EAL), to access and articulate their understanding confidently and accurately. It also ensures that pupils develop the communication skills necessary to express their learning effectively, which is vital for their academic progress and lifelong learning.
We use White Rose Education schemes for Maths and Science as starting points for planning to ensure consistency and progression within and across year groups. This structured approach guarantees that pupils build on prior knowledge systematically, mastering key concepts and skills before moving on to more complex ideas. The clarity and progression embedded in White Rose resources supports pupils from diverse backgrounds, including those who are disadvantaged (Pupil Premium) or from Forces families, by providing clear scaffolding and opportunities for Mastery.
Our curriculum promotes active and collaborative learning strategies, enabling pupils to develop as effective learners. This aligns with our commitment to developing confident and independent learners. Pupils learn to work together, reflect on their progress, and take responsibility for their learning journey. This is especially important in our context, where many pupils come from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and benefit from social learning opportunities that build resilience and respect.
Our curriculum fully meets the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum for all subjects. It ensures coverage of the knowledge, skills, and understanding defined for each key stage, while also embedding disciplinary skills such as critical thinking, enquiry, and creativity. The use of established schemes like Grammarsaurus, White Rose, and the Hillingdon RE guidance ensures that our curriculum is both robust and accessible.
